Baptism is one of the three sacraments of Christian Initiation (along with Eucharist and Confirmation) through which Catholics are incorporated as full members of the Church.
Baptism is the foundation for the Christian life; in Baptism we enter into the life of Christ. We begin a relationship with the Lord that grows throughout our lives and leads to eternal life. Baptism gives us God's life and frees us from sin.
Infant Baptism is usually celebrated the first three Sundays of the month after the 11:30 AM Mass. Arrangements are made through the parish office by calling Cindy Hope at 708-799-5400. Parents must be registered parishioners of IJP, or have permission from their home parish to have the baptism at IJP.
If this is your first child, we require that you take a Baptism Preparation Classprior to the Baptism. Classes can be taken before or after the birth of your child. Babies are welcome at the class. The class is recommended for any godparent who has not previously taken it. Baptismal Preparation is offered at IJP usually on the first Thursday of the month at 7:30 pm in the Ministry Center (former convent) Teen Room. Please call Cindy Hope at 708-799-5400 to attend this class. If you cannot attend the class at IJP, you can arrange to attend the class at another parish.
The Church requirements for Roman Catholic Godparents are:
A child must have one practicing Roman Catholic godparent in good standing with the Church. This Catholic godparent usually must be at least 16 years old and be mature enough to understand, accept and carry out the duties of a godparent.
• A godparent must have received the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation.
• A godparent must be living an exemplary life consistent with faith and morals as taught by the Roman Catholic Church.
• A godparent must be actively practicing the faith.
• A non-Catholic, baptized Christian may be chosen as a Christian Witness, as long as one godparent is Catholic.
Each family is allowed to have as many guests as they would like.
